Product name: SoColor Mochas

Client: L'Oreal USA / Matrix

Market Served: Hair Care

Packaging Specifications: Multi-color printing (stochastic screening) with UV gloss coating

Accomplishments: L'Oreal USA / Matrix created the season's spiciest hues with the introduction of its new SoColor Mocha series. Combining both warm and cool tones to create a harmony of shades ranging from chocolate browns to latte blondes, this line extension gives beautiful dimension to hair while providing smooth, rich color. They turned to Diamond Packaging to create a package that communicated color with confidence.

SoColor is the leading professional color brand in the United States and is used in thousands of salons nationwide. With SoColor, there's no guesswork - just exceptional color results. The packaging needed to convey this message and faithfully reproduce the color shades represented on the carton.

Diamond designed a carton where form follows function. The economical structure is converted as a glued, single piece with an integrated handle. The handle enhances consumer interaction and identifies the package as a comprehensive kit containing everything needed for creating stunning color effects.

Faithful reproduction of the five new shades on the carton required accuracy and repeatability. Diamond’s new Heidelberg offset press is equipped with advanced quality systems, including spectrophotometry, to ensure accurate color control throughout the press run. Salon professionals can have confidence that the color represented on the carton will match the hair color.

Diamond also employed frequency modulated (FM) screening to deliver near photographic fidelity from an offset printing process. FM screening is unique in that it varies the number of dots used, as opposed to amplitude modulated (AM) screening, which varies the size of the dot. The 20-micron FM dot eliminates all issues related to screen angles, resulting in smoother vignettes and softer color-to-color transitions not possible with traditional four-color process printing.

Product name: Diadermin Novalift

Client: Schwarzkopf & Henkel

Market Served: Cosmetics

Packaging Specifications: Multi-color printing with UV spot coating, hot foil stamping, and silver embossing

Accomplishments: Diadermin Novalift provides a brilliant complexion - and comes in a brilliant package from Rob. Leunis & Chapman Gruppe (rlc), which swayed the Duesseldorf-based cosmetics giant Schwarzkopf & Henkel with a wide range of body care and cosmetics packages it has created, in addition to promotional packaging for brands including Fa and Gliss Kur. Now the customer is launching Novalift across Europe: an anti-aging face cream that reduces wrinkles and ensures good looks. The glued folding carton sports a gracefully curved window without back-gluing, and is visually enhanced with UV spot coating. The matte white surface also features shiny silver embossing and hot foil stamping for metallic effects.

Product name: GlobeTrotter GT MA

Client: T-Mobile

Market Served: Telecommunications

Packaging Specifications: Multi-color printing with UV matte coating and embossing

Accomplishments: A square white carton embossed with the typical square digits of T-Mobile, Germany's leading provider of mobile telephone services. What could this package possibly hold? All you have to do is slide the outer carton to the left and right, and - behold! - the GlobeTrotter GT MAX card for laptops is revealed. An inlay holds the card, which the company offers to enable high-speed wireless Internet access. This clever packaging idea is the brainchild of Rob. Leunis & Chapman Gruppe. Before this, T-Mobile used a rather dull DVD cover made of PET as the outer packaging for the data cards. Now, thanks to the carton, the product has premium character: elegant white cartons with reduced graphics. Stylistic and CI-consistent. To cap it off, a gag is built in: a fold-out prop is die cut into the back so the carton can be stood up like a picture frame.

Product name: Will You Look at That! COPACO Project Puts Pictures in Windows

Client: Any

Market Served: Any

Packaging Specifications: Folding cartons incorporating printed windows

Accomplishments: A joint project by two COPACO companies is creating new effects for point-of-sale (POS). Rob. Leunis & Chapman Gruppe (rlc) has teamed up with pharmaceutical and label specialist Faller to develop a new premium packaging technique: printed windows!
Windows naturally remain windows, but the use of semi-transparent designs or full-tone text elements opens up new possibilities for presenting brands and products.

To accomplish this, windows are printed roller-to-roller using a UV flexographic process that is more commonly employed to produce self-adhesive labels. The key to positioning the motifs: the die-cutting machine scans the register and executes precise cuts, thus meeting the prerequisites for accurate gluing.

The advantages of strategic collaboration within the COPACO Group come into plain view in connection with projects that, like this one, break new ground. It was first launched by rlc, which decided to proactively address requests from customers for new package window effects. In this case, the printing expertise required to technically implement them was contributed by Faller.

Product name: Giggles

Client: Leveractive, LLC

Market Served: Software

Packaging Specifications: Multi-color printing (stochastic screening) with aqueous coating

Accomplishments: The Giggles Computer Funtime For Baby™ Software Series was created for parents as a method to introduce their babies to computers in an entertaining, playful, fun, and educational way. The packaging needed to capture the essence of this exciting product launch by introducing playful graphics with a multitude of colors.

Diamond delivered by incorporating its Diamond TruCOLOR™ color system in the production of the Giggles Computer Funtime For Baby™ CD gift sets and sleeves.

The Diamond TruCOLOR™ color system is a proprietary method of color control, color monitoring and color matching, offering unparalleled quality and economic benefits compared to traditional four-color process printing. The Diamond TruCOLOR™ color system uses just six colors to accurately and optimally reproduce over 1000 colors, while delivering near-photographic fidelity from an offset printing process. The large color gamut of the Diamond TruCOLOR™ color system is an efficient and economical method to reproduce a variety of vibrant and subtle colors without expensive plate changes.

The Diamond TruCOLOR™ color system also incorporates frequency modulated (FM) screening.

Diamond Contract Manufacturing (DCM), a division of Diamond Packaging, provided all of the fulfillment, including packing cartons with components, and distributing orders to retail locations and direct customers.

Product name: Shania by Stetson

Client: Coty Inc.

Market Served: Fragrance

Packaging Specifications: Multicolor printing (stochastic screening) with litho gold metallic, flexo gold metallic, aqueous matte pearlescent coating, foil stamping, and embossing

Accomplishments: Diamond employed special graphic techniques for the gift set packaging, elevating a standard tuck carton to an unprecedented level. The cartons feature .024 SBS paperboard complemented by embossing and gold foil accents around the window and for the stars, which are prominently displayed on the carton. The gold stars, which are meant to represent studs, connect the package to both the country-western image of Shania Twain and to the Stetson brand.

The vibrant pink fragrance cartons feature two hits of pink, special flexo gold ink, and pearlized matte aqueous coating. Hot foil stamping and embossing further enhance the graphics. Flexo gold ink was applied in-line on Diamond’s new Heidelberg offset press equipped with a Flexokit chambered blade coating system. The Flexokit is optimized for metallic and pearl luster coatings, delivering denser coverage, with greater uniformity.

Diamond utilized frequency modulated (FM) screening to deliver near photographic fidelity from an offset printing process. FM screening is unique in that it varies the number of dots used, as opposed to amplitude modulated (AM) screening, which varies the size of the dot. The 20-micron FM dot eliminated all issues related to screen angles, resulting in smoother vignettes and softer color-to-color transitions not possible with traditional four-color process printing.

The result is a packaging design that delivers impact at the retail environment, and asserts a modern, spirited image for the brand.

Product name: Color.smart™

Client: L'Oreal USA

Market Served: Hair Care

Packaging Specifications: Multi-color printing with UV coating, Iriodin® coating and holographic foil stamping

Accomplishments: Diamond has developed other 3D display products that have proven to be wildly successful in the hair care market. Unlike previous 3D "glorifiers", however, this point-of-purchase display is intended to actually hold and sell the product.

Diamond designed a unique header with a secondary rear panel that is glued to the front panel, creating a striking 3D appearance. The panel is further enhanced by die cutting around the photograph of the models, adding to the illusory effect. The economical structure is converted as a glued, single piece that pops up, similar to children's books.

The header is taped to an outer base that utilizes multiple die cuts to hold various products including shampoo, conditioner, nourishing shine cream and reflective shine spray. Another die cut on the front panel perfectly encloses the circular-shaped brochures.

The beautiful graphics are achieved using four color process inks, along with one special color, UV gloss coating and a new Iriodin® coating. The Iriodin® coating technology utilizes non-uniform pearl lustre particles to create unparalleled shimmer effects. The header is further distinguished by holographic rainbow foil stamping, highlighting the fact that this is a new product launch.

The innovative shape and beautifully printed graphics combine to form a captivating product display. The result is a promotional display that delivers impact at hair salons, and truly captures the essence of these exciting new products.

Product name: Live Xtreme Colors

Client: Schwarzkopf & Henkel

Market Served: Hair care

Packaging Specifications: Six color printing

Accomplishments: Tubes are predestined for cremes, gels and pastes. However they have an important drawback in that they do not make much of an impact at the point-of-sales. The new carton tube packaging promises to solve this. According to the motto an “own display for every tube” these tube folding cartons were developed by American packaging developers for the new product series “Life” by Schwarzkopf & Henkel and adapted for the German market by the Rob. Leunis & Chapman Group (RLC). The contour of the carton follows the shape of the tube like a second skin. The tube is attached at the cut-out at the front. The four-cornered standing surface enables a striking presentation on the shelf with an unusual “face” – and thus more than compensates for the disadvantage of the tube. The six color printing ensures a uniform brand image.

Product name: Veronica Ferres‘ Choice Brand

Client: Schwarzkopf & Henkel

The well-known German actress advertises for Diadermine, whereas RLC produces the promotion gift packaging for two of the brand’s new products. RLC’s task was to create packaging which causes a stir at the point-of-sale. And it did just that with an eye-catching positioning in the promotion packaging and hot foil embossing on the PET folding carton. This solution is a further demonstration of RLC’s expertise in creating unique cosmetics packaging. Wash gel, creme and application brush from the T-Zone facial care series fit harmoniously and strikingly into the packaging concept.

Product name: M3Power™

Client: The Gillette Company

Market Served: Personal care

Packaging Specifications: Multicolor printing with UV coating, hot foil stamping, and embossing

Accomplishments: MACH 3™ from Gillette is the world-wide leading system blade for wet shaves. The successful product has been constantly improved and with M3Power™ is currently undergoing a world-wide relaunch. The Rob. Leunis & Chapman Group (RLC) has accompanied Gillette Marketing as a packaging partner right from the beginning. The launch of Gillette M3Power™ was also in the competent hands of RLC. When implementing the new artwork, emphasis was placed on integration in the product family together with stressing the product’s innovative aspect through the packaging design. The razor packaging is made from PET and has a blister hood in an extravagant dish shape. The blade packaging picks up on the design and contours. The combination of different types of material and finishes reflects the brand’s innovative nature at the point-of-sale and helps reach the customer on an emotional level. The crossover packaging concept mixes several different materials: metal + lacquer + PET! Metallic coated cartons, PET, UV coating, hot foil embossing, relief and blind embossing are all used.

Product name: Curad Silver

Client: Beiersdorf

Market Served: Health Care

Packaging Specifications: 6 color printing with UV varnish and silver hot foil stamping

Accomplishments: Curad is the American equivalent to Germany's Hansaplast, one of the best known plaster (bandage) brands in the country. Both brands are made by Beiersdorf. The Rob. Leunis & Chapman Group (RLC group ) was contracted by the international giant to supply packaging solutions for two new products from the Curad range, "Curad silver" and "Curad silver gel", reflecting the premium character and high quality of the novel plasters.

The folding carton catches the eye at the point-of-sale thanks to its silver and silver green shining front panel. The silver effect on the front is attained by hot foil embossing, followed by six color printing and inline UV varnishing. The Originality Seal and ease of use of the packaging are achieved with an ingenious closure system. After breaking the perforation upon opening the plasters for the first time, the plaster package can still be safely closed, thus protecting the contents.

The folding cartons are supplied by RLC to Beiersdorf in Hamburg, Germany and in Spain from where they are filled and subsequently shipped to America.
