Packaging Industry - A Review of 2002

Kista, Sweden – August 5, 2003 - Despite a continuing stream of technical innovation in packaging, 2002 saw overall markets staying flat. For beverage containers, including PET, shipments were similar to those of 2001.

According to figures from Salomon Smith Barney in New York, shipments of non-PET rigid plastic containers were up only 5.5% in 2002 and flexible film shipments rose a mere 0.2%.

Although the year saw the advent of shrink film labels for speciality waters and soft drinks, zippers on plastic bags and retort pouches, films printed in eleven colours and precise dosage dispensing closures for medicines, glass and metal containers continued to withstand competition from plastics.
